Farmscrapers Stack Agriculture to the Sky

This Mound-day’s Amazon link is to a book by MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and professor of microbiology and public health in environmental health sciences at Columbia University, where he was a multiple Best Teacher award winner, Dr. Dickson Despommier.

It’s a Library Journal Best Book of 2010, with diverse endorsements ranging from The Huffington Post to Businessworld, even including Sting, who raved, “A world-changing innovation whose time has come. This visionary book provides a blueprint for securing the world’s food supply and at the same time solving one of the greatest environmental crises facing us today.”

The book is The Vertical Farm: Feeding the World in the 21st Century

Popular “vlog bro,” Hank Green, posted an article at Eco Geek in 2009 about plans for a Manhattan high rise vertical farm, New Skyscraper Farm Mimics Nature.

Dystopian Farm vertical growth.
Inhabitat: Spiraling Skyscraper Farms for a Future Manhattan.

More recently, plans for a green skyfarm are being made in China, according to this video from Vidello Productions, Shenzen Farmscrapers Tower Concept Design, also embedded below.

Paul Wheaton Preaches Permaculture (Explicit Language)

Paul Wheaton preaches it in this 2013 keynote talk to the S. California Permaculture Convergence (video also embedded below).

The Self Reliance Mastery book from Amazon here contains a contribution by Wheaton. He also has DVDs and books for sale at Richsoil.com.

The talk introduces dozens of permaculture related applications, presented to a good crowd in an actual church, where he nonetheless throws out expletives with abandon. (Some call him “The Bad Boy of Permaculture.”)

I’ve been a fan for years. He’s been a frequent guest on Jack Spirko’s The Survival Podcast. Paul’s own empire includes Permies.com (information and forums) and Richsoil.com (more media and products).

For libertarians, the talk includes how to build durable homes for hardly any money, which in itself avoids taxes, and avoiding “suck minimum wage jobs,” and if you don’t like Monsanto, frackers or other bad actors–he strongly suggests you don’t give them money!!! Forget idiotic protests. Wheaton gets a lot of hate comments for some of his controversial positions including his emphasis on permaculture techniques instead of the religious and political cult associated with it. He expresses the heretical hope permaculture farmers make more money than the ones that follow Monsanto.

Let Paul Wheaton’s sermon begin. Try not to laugh and amazingly, you might learn somethin’. Again, trigger warning! Explicit language and new ideas.

Buckets of Life of Death

Wikipedia:CambridgeBayWeather
A Modern Honey Bucket.
I heard about food grade storage buckets and alcohol fermentation and distillation in buckets on The Survival Podcast, and got to thinking about The Bucket List after a recent memorial service.

You can kick the can down the road and achieve eternal youth, but not if you mistakenly kick the bucket.

Then I thought about how many of life’s needs can be met by the use of buckets until the final kick-off, including personal waste as reported in this Anchorage Daily News story, “Honey buckets remain a sanitation concern in Bethel.”

I found that story from Bethel, Alaska by chance. One resident, Tim Meyers, grows fresh vegetables in the permafrost there, and according to Mark Dowie, using heat from composting in a greenhouse. More info is linked from my post at PermaKent, “Better Than The Best Idea.”

The Meyers Farm website tells the story and has a link to an audio interview on the Press page.

Rainwater can be captured in buckets, and plants grown in them when full of soil and allowing for drainage.

There are even “bucketponics” combinations of fish and plants able to feed the fish and the fish in return able to feed and fertilize the plants. Only sun and water agitation and filtration might be needed to keep the system going. And perhaps some added compost as fish and plants are consumed.

Buckets might catch the wind or serve as part of a water wheel generator. A bucket brigade can deliver a steady amount of water if no hose or pressure is available to fight a fire.

Other writers on the web have explored the multiple uses of the typical 5-gallon bucket, including Wikipedia, “Buckets–Types and Uses.”

Other uses include as a musical instrument, seat, and trash can.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

Howard will give us a “date down” on the subject of The Massive Mortgage Meltdown, of which we are still in the throws. M.E.R.S. (“Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems”) is a system of real property registration ostensibly intended to protect and streamline hypothecation of equities but which instead lead to widespread abuse and outright fraud.

This situation coupled with overheated speculation in the markets contributed to the collapse of commerce and financial institutions in turn precipitating our present economic recession.

Supposedly, and mainly due to governmental intervention, the markets and economy generally are recovering, but Main Street still doesn’t seem to believe it.

What can we believe? Howard will help us to interpret, analyze, and understand current conditions and to prepare our portfolios and ourselves for the effects.

Please join us for this important review.

Please join us for the Aftermeeting in the lounge at the Doubletree Hotel Culver City. When we adjourn Dinah’s at 10:30 p.m., proceed to the Doubletree and we’ll reconvene for an informal gathering by 11 p.m. until 2 a.m.

J. Kent Hastings of the Kingdom of Nye, (County in Nevada, town of Pahrump), will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the event and will offer a Toast to the evening’s festivities.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

More revelations about the still little known (outside of real estate and mortgage banking circles) system alleged to have exacerbated the real estate value crash of a few years ago, the effects which still reverberate through the economy.

UPDATES:

MERS still exists. Its role continues to be confused. What is not is that MERS exacerbates the problem.

Robo-signing still exists. John O’Brien, the Register of Deeds in Salem, Massachusetts is still getting documents signed by the notorious robo-signer “Linda Green”. [Featured on a segment of “60 Minutes”.] Jeff Thigpen, the Register of Deeds of Guilford County, North Carolina has joined in the investigation. The results were downright ugly. Land records all over the country appear compromised by MERS, robo-signing, a polite word for document fraud, securitization, ad nauseum.

The current federal administration was attempting to negotiate a 50-state settlement for pennies on the dollar. President Obama announced further investigations in the State of the Union Address on January 24, 2012. Several state attorney generals have been holding out. This includes California attorney general Kamala D. Harris and Nevada attorney general Catherine Cortez Masto.

We have our first “known” dead body, a whistle blower notary in Nevada, Tracy Lawrence. She was 43. That is the power of the Too Big to Fail Banks.

Douglas E. French, the President of the Ludwig von Mises Institute, said that the solution would be allow to the Too Big Too Fail Institutions to declare bankruptcy. [Talk on January 14, 2012 at the Mises Circle in Houston, Texas. Available on mises.tv.]

Barring some total reversal of course, this will almost certainly bring down the United States of America and the worldwide economy.

So let Resilient Freedom Foundation show you how to be better prepared for the possibly coming chaos.

J. Kent Hastings of the Kingdom of Nye, (County in Nevada, town of Pahrump), will serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the event and will offer a Toast to the evening’s festivities.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

The topic for this month is a little known (outside of real estate and mortgage banking circles) system alleged to have exacerbated the real estate value crash of a few years ago, the effects which still reverberate through the economy.

Meant to facilitate the assignment and hypothecation of mortgages- a financial tool- it has instead worsened the foreclosure crisis, because its badly flawed implementation has prevented bad paper from clearing the market.

From Howard’s masterful thesis:

The Secrets of MERS: A Fiasco Unfolds– Or what you do not know can hurt you and many other people badly!
In other words: Welcome to the Massive Mortgage Meltdown.

It is more than just the blue-gray and weatherworn house in Denmark, Maine. As the summer of 2011 becomes the winter of 2012 the secrets – whether they involve widespread incompetence, fraud or even worse – perhaps the deliberate crashing of the American economy – regarding MERS (“Mortgage Electronic Registration Systems”, abbreviated “MERS”) – and its effects – are becoming apparent around the world.

Look at this incredible quote:

“’The whole financial system is becoming a lot less transparent,’ says Hernando de Soto, a Peruvian economist who has written on the importance of well-defined property rights. ‘You can’t size up risk anymore.’”

Being able to reasonably assess risk is at the essence of practical investment. The inability to accomplish this is a prime cause of the current stagnation. Howard will proffer his analysis as to the why and wherefore. As usual, the answer to the question qui bono very often informs the answer to the question quare (why).

Please join us for an evening of relevance and revelation. Howard will help us to understand the reasons for MERS, how this system operates, and the disturbing implications of its government “mixed economy” interference in the markets.

Special Note: VENUE FOR AFTERMEETING: DOUBLETREE HOTEL LOUNGE (Formerly RADISSON)

Please join us for the Aftermeeting in the lounge at the Doubletree Hotel Culver City. When we adjourn Dinah’s at 10:30 p.m., proceed to the Doubletree and we’ll reconvene for an informal gathering by 11 p.m. until 2 a.m.

The Doubletree is at 6161 West Centinela Avenue at Arizona in Culver City 90230-6306 (one block West of Sepulveda Boulevard). It is possible to walk from Dinah’s in about two minutes or repark your car on Arizona one minute away, but it is recommended to park in the hotel lot. N.B.: the available hotel parking is a pay lot, however the bar will validate your parking with any purchase. The lounge is immediately inside the hotel lobby adjacent to the desk.

It is not permitted to make a left turn onto Centinela from Arizona, so a good way is to turn right and go to the intersection with Sepulveda, make a U-turn and drive back to the hotel, which will be on the right hand side.

Doubletree Telephone: (310) 649-1776 For More Hotel Info, see: Radisson Website:

Advanced Economy in a Box

TED Talk post
Open Source Ecology
Marcin Jakubowski describes his “civilization starter kit” idea to an enthusiastic audience at the TED conference held in Long Beach earlier this year.

Marcin plans to create open source designs with clear documentation, 3D models, schematics, blueprints and how-to videos for all of the 50 key technologies he believes are necessary to have a sustainable advanced industrial economy with local resources.

He shows construction hardware (a CEB press) that uses the dirt beneath your feet to make 5,000 compressed earth bricks in a day, enough to build a house.

Also, the LifeTrac tractor is an example of agricultural machinery that “breaks new ground,” although he’s also interested in no till permaculture organic food production.

Combine all that with the computerized fabrication and Internet distribution of ideas you’d expect from Make Magazine type hackers and perhaps shortages can be eliminated for jobs, food, fuel, housing and consumer doodads which can be 3D printed.

Way to go, Open Source Ecology! See Marcin’s TED Talk at YouTube.

Off-Grid Legal Challenges

Despite a hard left, class war perspective, The People’s Voice nonetheless supports a property owner’s desire to live simply in his RV against county government regulations in their story, by Rady Ananda, “Elderly Man Evicted from His Land for Living off the Grid.”

The man is also being defended on Ron Paul forums, which is evidence that solidarity is possible between the left wing organic hippies and right wing backwoods survivalists (or “preppers,” if you prefer).

There seems to be universal concern that backyard homesteaders and small organic farmers will be negatively impacted by S.510 (Google search) out of proportion with their risk to public food safety.

A TV news report about Dick Thompson’s plight in Madison County, Indiana is also linked by TPV to YouTube, “Madison Co. to evict man from camper.

Woodland Houses for the Homeless

  How to Live. . .
I found a link to Nick Rosen’s “offgridnick” YouTube channel on the http://off-grid.net website.

One particular video, dated May 4, 2010, brings the Resilient Freedom mission of clearing legal paths to self reliance to mind, “Planning permission for off the grid living.”

From Nick’s description at
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4HfHMUK6bR4:

“Nigel [Lowthrop] got planning permission to live in his 36 acre wood by turning part of it into a local free resource. This story is told in more detail in my book HOW TO LIVE OFF GRID.”
