Special Note: VENUE FOR AFTERMEETING: DOUBLETREE HOTEL LOUNGE (Formerly RADISSON)

Please join us for the Aftermeeting in the lounge at the Doubletree Hotel Culver City. When we adjourn Dinah’s at 10:30 p.m., proceed to the Doubletree and we’ll reconvene for an informal gathering by 11 p.m. until 2 a.m.

The Doubletree is at 6161 West Centinela Avenue at Arizona in Culver City 90230-6306 (one block West of Sepulveda Boulevard). It is possible to walk from Dinah’s in about two minutes or repark your car on Arizona one minute away, but it is recommended to park in the hotel lot. N.B.: the available hotel parking is a pay lot, however the bar will validate your parking with any purchase. The lounge is immediately inside the hotel lobby adjacent to the desk.

It is not permitted to make a left turn onto Centinela from Arizona, so a good way is to turn right and go to the intersection with Sepulveda, make a U-turn and drive back to the hotel, which will be on the right hand side.

Doubletree Telephone: (310) 649-1776 For More Hotel Info, see: Doubletree Website:

SAD NEWS

We are very sad to report that Steve Reed passed away on Saturday February 4, 2012. According to his brother Tim, Steve passed away in his sleep that day, apparently due to complications of Diabetes. Steve was a libertarian, a Karl Hess Club member, and a club patron. He was among a select group of sponsors of the 100th meeting of the KHC that was the occasion of Karl Hess IV’s first visit to the club. He was also instrumental in the inception of the KHC website.

Last year, in lieu of the scheduled speaker who was not able to attend, Steve participated in an impromptu dramatization wherein he interpreted the role of Professor De La Paz, a character created by Robert A. Heinlein in his novel The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Steve was also a fan of the television show “My So-Called Life” and its star Claire Danes, to cite just one of our several points of mutual interest.

He was a caring and devoted friend, a Brother in Liberty, and a staunch and steady supporter of the Karl Hess Club. He is very much missed and we extend our deepest condolence to Steve’s brother Tim, his cousin Debbie, and all his family and many friends.

A memorial celebration of Steve’s life is being planned and details will be available as soon as they are finalized.

“Nancy Shiffrin’s poems are gut-land responses to a personal life of risks, frustrations, and celebrations. Her writing is lean, sensitive, erotic. She celebrates the female body with a rare vigor.” Robert Peters

Read a selection from THE VAST UNKNOWING

THE VAST UNKNOWING collects a wide spectrum of poetry from Nancy Shiffrin…One of her main questions is Who are we? What made us that person? She explores a number of sources of our identity….

(in the poem) “My Shoah” (Shiffrin) brings together many of her disparate threads—family religion…evil…details from her personal history—and makes them work together. When she is at her best, as in this poem, Shiffrin produces deep powerful poetry. G. Murray Thomas, poetix.net
